Three million ~ Maggie Lawson

Her eyes scream in silence
‘neath cool desert air
razored pain writhes
like desperate prey
locked in her lioness teeth
as she carries it to her pride.

Her eight year old legs,
those quivering lambs,
submit to maternal bond,
held down and apart
as she is severed
from potential sin.

Fired metal
dams rivered blood
and quaking frame
soon labours
bereft of care.
Beneath fevered brow
infection of flesh
and culture
eat what razor left.

Pain and pride adopted
as unnatural twins
shadow her careful step
and her tomorrows,
her value determined
by what is gone
not what is left.

And three million
faceless sisters
will join her this year

as they make bloody angels
star-fished in sand.

*Prevalence of FGM. It is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in the countries where the practice is concentrated. Furthermore, there are an estimated 3 million girls at risk of undergoing female genital mutilation every year.  It is illegal but nobody is ever prosecuted.

  1. I only like his because of the power of your voice and amazing strength of your writing. What a horrible fact that this still goes on in supposed civilized societies. And yet how many people are not aware.
Thank you, Maggie, for writing this.

  2. This is, in my opinion, the strongest piece of yours that I have read; and that is saying something because you have a powerful voice in all of your writing. This is horrifying and beyond disturbing. This is writing that doesn’t allow the reader to look away. We shouldn’t be able to. This is an important piece you have written, Maggie.

  3. Back in the 1970’s a top
    public servant authored a
    policy, for the Australian
    government, titled
    ‘Multiculturalism’. It’s main
    assertion was that ALL cultures
are equally valid. This was to
    prepare the population for
    mass immigration ( as
    demanded by ‘big business’).
    Years late that top public
    servant conceded he was
    sadly mistaken.

    • We (all cultures) have our ‘ways’ but at some point, there must be a line between freedom to express one’s culture and cultural atrocities. Thank you for the read and comment David, much appreciated.

  4. Maggie, please accept my ‘like’ in the way that in was intended – this is an horrific subject, but your words are expertly chosen. What adds to the disturbing nature of this is the fact that , in some cultures, this practice is female initiated: the level of ignorance is astounding. Powerful work.
